WELWYN Garden City teenager Tom Lewis has joined such famous golfing names as Greg Norman, Fred Couples and Jon Daly in competing at the 2010 Australian Open Championships at The Lakes in Sydney.

The 19-year-old English amateur started well in the event earlier today (Thursday), his 2 under par 70 from the first round leaves him tied 18th on the leaderboard.

Just ahead of Lewis, with 3 under par 69 , is former Open Champion and USA PGA winner Daly.

In a field dominated by the host country’s players, Aussie Matthew Griffin leads the way with 7 under par 65.

The competition is being played at The Lakes in Sydney from today (Thursday) until Sunday (December 5), it offers a prize purse of AUD$1.5 million.

Lewis prepared for the event by coming close to pulling off a sensational victory over the professionals in the New South Wales Open only to lose out in a three-way play-off for the title.

The Herts ace had finished tied on 14 under par 270 with Australians Peter Cooke and local favourite Peter O’Malley but experience triumphed over youth as O’Malley won at the third extra hole at The Vintage.
