TOM Lewis finished the first round of the BMW PGA Championships at Wentworth at +1.

Things started well for the Welwyn Garden City professional golfer, with two birdies from the first four holes.

But two bogeys in the next four, and then a par on the ninth saw him finish the first half of his session level par.

The 22-year-old hit two birdies in his back nine, but also, crucially, a double bogey on the 13th, which meant he finished the day one over.

Lewis did have a better time of it on the Wentworth course than former world number one Rory Mclroy however, with the man from Northern Ireland ending his session on +2.

All eyes switch to tomorrow’s play now, with Lewis, currently tied 63rd at the time of writing, waiting to find whether his efforts have helped him make the cut.

Welwyn Garden City golf legend Sir Nick Faldo holds the record number of wins, four, at the Championships.

He triumphed in 1978, 1980, 1981 and 1989
