The 2015/16 KLM Welwyn Hatfield Sunday Football League got underway at the weekend with only a handful of matches played while some grounds are still in use for cricket.

All matches saw players and officials stand around the centre circle for a minute’s applause in respect of former league chairman Ted Ellis who passed away not long after last season’s AGM.

The first goal in the league came very early in the first half in the match involving Bradmore Rovers and the Grove.

Mark Freestone scoring for Bradmore only to end up on the losing side 5-2.

On an adjacent pitch, the first penalty was awarded in the match involving two new teams; Sun Inn Lemsford and LL Herts.

Steve Charles took responsibility and scored to bring Sun Inn Lemsford level after the new club took the lead.

Charles later seized his opportunity to convert a second penalty and help secure a sound 5-1 victory for Sun Inn.

Three of this season’s new clubs played and scored but failed to record a win.

The Cock will be out to take their chance next week and win their first match.

No hat-tricks were scored in the first week, and there were no clean sheets, but there were two impressive five-goal hauls, plus an impressive top score of seven for Bradmore 2014 in their match against King George Seniors which means it looks like the keepers may be in for a tough season.
