World number 10 Alison Waters fell to a surprise defeat against compatriot Emily Whitlock in the second round of the 2017 Allam British Open to bow out of the World Series tournament held at Hull’s Airco Arena.

Welwyn Garden City’s Waters, the 33-year-old former world number three and three-time British Open semi-finalist, was up against it from the off as world number 15 Whitlock came out all guns blazing.

She forced Waters to chase the ball into all four corners of the court.

Whitlock completed an 11-4, 11-7, 11-9 victory in just over 30 minutes to reach the last eight of a World Series tournament for the first time in her career and send Waters out at the second round stage for the second year in succession.

“I just didn’t think I’d win, I’m pretty chuffed about it,” said Whitlock.

“I’ve beaten Alison once before in practice, but it’s never the same, tournament wins are just amazing.”
