Welwyn Garden City boss Adam Fisher expects a tough Herts Senior Cup tie against League Two club Stevenage whether their manager Teddy Sheringham plays or not.
Sheringham, the 49-year-old former England, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur striker, along with his coach Kevin Watson, has registered as a player ahead of the clash at Herns Lane on Wednesday night.
Fisher told the Welwyn Hatfield Times: “It doesn’t matter if Teddy Sheringham plays, although it would be great for the publicity and for the crowd, we are prepared for a tough game whoever plays.
“As soon as the draw comes out for this competition you want to play Watford or Stevenage, it doesn’t matter what team they put out whether it’s the first team, reserves or youth players, they will be strong.”
The Citizens, who play five steps below their opponenets in the SSML Premier Division, are having a run of cup games at the moment having beaten FC Broxbourne Borough 8-3 in the SSML Premier Division Cup last Tuesday, but losing 1-0 away to Cricklewood Wanderers in the FA Vase on Saturday.
Wednesday’s county cup clash has attracted national interest due to Sheringham’s potential involvement, something which Fisher, who guided his side to the SSML Division One league and cup double last season, is hoping his club can exploit.
The 33-year-old, said: “I’ve just messaged the lads to say ‘it’s good publicity for the club and it’s a game I want us to do well in with the performance as much as the result’.
“People will be coming down to watch that don’t normally and if we put in a good display hopefully they will think about coming back in the future.
“We had around 400 spectators for the Hatfield Town derby game and the Saffron Walden Town FA Cup tie last season and I was expecting around 300 for this one before this all kicked-off.
“I really don’t know how many will be coming along, I’d guess a minimum of 250-300.”
When asked if he was registered as a player like his managerial counterpart Sheringham, Fisher added: “I was thinking about it, but no I’ve only played two Sunday games this season and it would take away an opportunity from one of the lads.”
The game kicks-off at 7.45pm, with entrance £6 for adults and £3 for concessions.
