WGC'S 2nd XI got their pre-season off to a flier with a deserved four-wicket win over a West Herts XI on Saturday.

In a match played in poor weather conditions, WGC restricted their opponents to 150-7 from 40 overs after an efficient bowling performance.

Star man with the ball for the Digswell Park side was Luke Kemp, who took 4-28 as he sets his sight on making the step up to the 1st XI.

Simon Bridgewater also snapped up a couple of wickets.

In reply, WGC stuttered to 71-5, but a fantastic 79-run stand between Chris Stainsby (43) and Ed Tucker left them with only one run needed for a victory from 32 overs, and this was achieved comfortably.

Captain Chris Molyneux has said the aim this year of the 2nd XI is to blood the youngsters and ensure they progress and improve all the time, and on this showing they should attain a decent league position.

Next up for the 2nd XI is a trip to Winchmore Hill 2nds on Saturday.

The Saracens Herts League season opens the following week with a home match against Northchurch in Division Two on May 3.
