Smashing family fun served up at the Orchard club

Orchard Tennis Club kicked off the new tennis season in style as the Welwyn Garden City club opened its doors to the general public for its annual open day recently.
The event is fast becoming a real fixture in the town’s sporting calendar and attracted a record number of visitors to the Blakemere Road-based club for a full-on afternoon of tennis, fun and games.
The club’s three top-quality Trojan tennis courts were in heavy demand throughout the whole day with adults and children of all ages and abilities able to enjoy free tennis events and coaching masterclasses courtesy of head coach Mark Roskilly and his team.
The competition for fastest service of the day was won by Shaun Woods with an impressive service of 94mph.
And there was plenty of entertainment off-court too with sideshows, face-painting, bouncy castle, cake stall, children’s craft stall, beer and Pimm’s tent and barbecue.
The membership tent was kept busy with over 30 new members signing up on the day and lots of junior players registering for coaching courses after school and at weekends.
Many new members reported that they had previously been unaware of the club’s existence, tucked away in the heart of the west side even though it dates back to the 1930s.
Jamie Simmonds, Orchard’s chairman, made a closing speech thanking the club’s volunteers and everyone for coming.
He said: “It’s been a brilliant afternoon and wonderful to see so many people discovering our great tennis club and getting on court and having fun. Here’s to next year.”
