A POTTERS Bar schoolboy fell just short in his quest to net the Herts U13 boys' B singles title.

Dame Alice Owen's pupil Luke Short was narrowly beaten in the final of the HSBA tournament at the Stevenage Leisure Centre.

The Gazelles club member went down 21-17 to Hitchin Boys' student Ben Smith.

The competition was open to non county squad players and the 46 entrants came mainly from five schools - Lochinver House, Ralph Sadleir, Haberdashers' Aske's, St Albans and Hitchin Boys.

They initially played in six unseeded groups of five and four pools of four.

As a result, there were several very close games in the groups, with box winners being eventual champion Smith, Daniel Farrugia, Janiv Shah, Vincent Chan, George Dobson, Nick Shone, James Abrams, Luke Short, Lochinver pupil James Finlayson and Alexander Lathem.

They, along with all the group runners-up, played in the main event and Smith had a smooth run to the final in the top half with wins over Lochinver House's Paras Maroo and fellow Hitchin schoolboys James Abrams and Janiv Shah.

Potters Bar youngster Short came through the bottom half of the draw after beating St Albans' Darius Faiz-Mahdav, Lochinver pupil Oliver Gomar and Daniel Farrugia on the way.

The final between Ben and Luke was hard fought but the Hitchin pupil proved just stronger and won the match.

In the plate event, eventual winner Edward Lewis, having beaten Lochinver House boy Tim Le Couilliard 21-10, had a much harder fight in the quarters against George Rose, just scraping through 21-20.

He then beat Aarom Rafi in the semis 21-7 to reach the final.

Daniel Gold came through in the other half to the final, beating Swifts club member Samuel Gan, a pupil at Dame Alice Owen's, 21-15, Jaimin Patel 21-16 and Raaj Vadodoria 21-13.

However, he couldn't manage another win and St Albans schoolboy Lewis easily beat him in the plate decider.
