COMETS club ace David Maughan was runner-up in the Herts Schools' Under-13 boys' singles tournament.
The Sherrardswood School pupil battled through the opening box stages and the main draw knockout rounds to reach the county final at the Stevenage Leisure Centre.
However, Maughan was beaten in the title decider by Nobel School, Stevenage, pupil Conor Bambrick.
Twenty-two boys contested the event last month, half of them being county squad players.
They were split into four groups of four and two groups of three.
There were several close games in the boxes with Max Hodgkinson, Michael Peak, Mitch Chapman, Maughan, Lyall Daniels and Matthew Widdicombe all winning their respective pools.
They and the second-placed competitors went into the main event where Hodgkinson and Widdicombe, along with runners-up Bambrick and Edward Byrne, had byes to the quarter-finals.
There they were eventually joined by Goffs pupil Peak, Maughan, who is a member of Hatfield club Comets, Swifts player Chapman and Oliver White.
In the last eight, Bambrick defeated Verulam schoolboy Hodgkinson 21-20 in a very close game.
Chapman, another Verulam pupil, accounted for fellow Swifts club member Peak by the same score.
Maughan had a comfortable win over Hitchin schoolboy White, while Widdicombe had to work a little harder to defeat Bryne, who attends St Columba's College in St Albans and is also a member of Hatfield junior badminton club Swifts.
Bambrick defeated Chapman in his semi-final and Maughan joined him in the final after beating Chauncy pupil Widdicombe 21-17.
Lochinver House's Kit Akin-Agunbiade lost to Vincent Chan in a close plate final.
