SWIFTS club colleagues Alex English and Kirsty Southey faced each other across the net in the final of the Herts Under-13 girls' singles.

The title showdown was eventually won by Chancellor's School pupil English 21-14.

A total of 15 girls entered the HSBA event held at the Stevenage Leisure Centre last month and they were split into three groups of five for the opening box stages.

There were several very close games and English, fellow Chancellor's pupil Georgia Pittson and Mount Grace girl Lexy Richards all won their groups.

English and Gazelles club member Richards both then received byes through to the semi-finals.

Chancellor's student Jessie Northen beat Herts U13 B singles champion Hannah Last in the quarter-finals to book a meeting with English.

Stopsley High pupil Southey defeated Gazelles junior club player Pittson in the other half of the draw.

Southey went on to beat Richards 21-12, while English defeated fellow Brookmans Park schoolgirl Northen.

English followed this up with a comfortable 21-14 win against Swifts colleague Southey to become the county's U13 singles champion.

In the plate, Dame Alice Owen's girl Lizzie Airey came through the top half of the draw, beating Renu Dhall-Chopra and Bishop's Hatfield pupil Pui Yi Tam.

Chloe Bungey defeated first Summer Winkworth in the bottom half of the draw and then Hannah McLaren 22-20 in a very close game to reach the final.

Airey, another member of Mount Grace-based club Gazelles, ran out the winner against Swifts player Bungey.

Seventeen girls entered the Under-10 singles competition on the same day and Ellie Makewell emerged triumphant.

She beat Wheatfields JMI schoolgirl and Swifts youngster Lia Willis in the last four and then Leah Tomlin in the final.

Quarter-finals: Jessie Northen (Chancellor's) beat Hannah Last (Dame Alice Owen's) 21-18; Kirsty Southey (Stopsley High) beat Georgia Pittson (Chancellor's) 21-8.

Semi-finals: Alex English (Chancellor's) beat Jessie Northen 21-14; Kirsty Southey beat Lexy Richards (Mount Grace) 21-12.

Final: Alex English beat Kirsty Southey 21-14.

Plate Final: Lizzie Airey (Dame Alice Owen's) beat Chloe Bungey (Chancellor's) 21-14.

U10 Girls' Singles

Quarter-finals: Keya Patani (St Albans Girls' High) beat Taylor Burniston (Wilbury JM) 21-8; Leah Tomlin (Norton St Nicholas) beat Aimee Hodgkinson (Sherrardswood) 21-13; Lia Willis (Wheatfields JM) beat Paige Taylor (Norton St Nicholas) 21-7; Ellie Makewell (Lodge Farm JMI) beat Oshini Kodituwakku (Wilbury JM) 21-8.

Semi-finals: Leah Tomlin beat Keya Patani 21-17; Ellie Makewell beat Lia Willis 21-11.

Final: Ellie Makewell beat Leah Tomlin 21-5.

Plate Final: Jessica Marshall (Norton St Nicholas) beat Hope Cracknell (Norton St Nicholas) 21-13.
