Potters Bar Town head into possibly the biggest game in the club’s history with manager Steve Ringrose comparing it to being on Who Wants To Be a Millionaire.

Town go to Hereford on Saturday in the second qualifying round of the FA Trophy with all the expectations being that it will result in a home victory.

Hereford come with a huge tradition.

They are a phoenix club that rose from the ashes of Football League side Hereford United and still attract crowds of 2,500 to their Edgar Street ground as they continue their rise back up the leagues.

And while the Bar manager knows the enormity of the task in hand, he is also well aware of what might happen.

He said: “With any draw you always want to be at home but if you do get drawn away, then it might as well be against the cream of the crop.

“It’s like going on Who Wants to be a Millionaire. If you asked me if I had a chance of winning the million, I said no.

“But there’s always that chance.

“We’ll know how they will set up tactically and we’ll prepare on Thursday night.

“Preparation is paramount. It’s important that the players are focused on what they are there for.

“It will be interesting. Some of our lads will never have experienced anything like it but if we do it right, who knows?

“We did that last year against Bath City [in the FA Cup] and got a replay and won.

“Good luck to them. They are a league club in all but name and if they put their house in order they can achieve their goals.

“They are putting themselves back on the map.”

However, the Scholars have had to push all thoughts of the Trophy clash to the backs of their mind as they have had three games in between since last Monday’s draw.

Defeat to Harpenden Town in the Herts Senior Cup was followed by a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Romford in the Bostik League North Division on Saturday.

And Bar had to fight from 2-0 down at home to Cheshunt in another league game on Tuesday to draw 2-2.

Ringrose said: “We needed that win [against Romford] to keep us on the shirt tails of the leaders.

“We’d like to think we can have a run at the play-offs this year.”
