A poor third quarter cost Saracens Mavericks dear as the lost 54-50 away to reigning Vitality Netball Superleague champions Wasps.

It was the first meeting of the sides since both were backed by two of English rugby’s biggest clubs and the clash in Coventry was worthy of the billing.

Mavs had overturned a two-point deficit at the end of the first quarter to lead by four just before half-time.

By the break though the teams were level at 27-27 and with the Hatfield side using their bench, they failed to get going after the restart and Wasps pulled seven points clear.

That was enough to see them to victory despite a late fight from the visitors, who lost for the second time this season.

Speaking to Sky Sports head coach Kat Ratnapala said: “We’re in round five and I wanted to make changes and see what we can do.

“The defeat wasn’t down to that. It was about combinations and we have to go back to the drawing board.”
