POTTERS Bar golfer Anthony Hughes was the winner of the Herts Salver competition at Whipsnade Park.

Hughes' one over par round of 73 was just good enough to head the 16 players who qualify for the Herts Golf Union County Championship at Knebworth next month.

Scoring was never easy on a fine but blustery day, with five over par returns of 77 enough to qualify for a place in the main championship.

Sandy Lodge's Neil Brinkworth was runner-up on countback from Porters Park's Luke Gutteridge after both shot rounds of 74.

South Herts' Garry Cooper also carded 74 for fourth place.

Knebworth golfer Ross Woodbridge followed on 75 to earn a place in the county field at his home club from June 13-15.

Woodbridge finished ahead of Mark Cohen, another Potters Bar golfer, and former champion Charles McKay, from Letchworth, both on 75.

The top 16 now join the pre-qualifiers in the County Championship at Knebworth, commencing on June 13.
