Welwyn climbed to the top of the London 3NW table on Saturday after a dominant 41-8 victory over third placed Grasshoppers.

First-half tries from Rory Harcourt, Harry Gillespie and Rob Picken handed Ian Matthews’ side a 19-3 lead at the break, with the away side only registering through a penalty.

The second half was equally as dominant as Wayne Child, skipper Grant Keeler and a Tom Turner brace as the hosts ran out easy winners.

Points with the boot were kicked by Dave Wells.

Grasshoppers’ only joy of a desperate second 45 mins came through an unconverted late try to slightly reduce their arrears.

The 41-8 triumph over one of the better sides in the league showed what Welwyn are capable of, according to coach Matthews.

He said: “It’s great to see a home game where the players were able to realise their full potential and just give a glimpse of what’s possible at this club at senior rugby level.”
