A late second-half fightback meant Welwyn missed out on even a bonus point as their trip to west London ended in a 27-19 defeat against Grasshoppers.

They had led 19-12 early in the second period when a trademark try from Rob Picken had stretched their half-time advantage even further.

But the Osterley hosts battled back superbly well after that with two tries, one of which was converted, and a penalty robbing the Hobbs Way-based rugby club of their losing point.

Hoppers started much the stronger and were ahead on three minutes with Louis Brown charging over.

But Welwyn responded with Harry Gillespie’s scorching run and Dave Fennell’s conversion putting the ahead.

That pattern repeated itself again when Liam Scofield, and another kick from Fennell, restored their lead following James Kent’s try for the hosts.

Picken’s effort gave Welwyn breathing room but it was to prove merely the prelude the Grasshoppers’ finale.
