WELWYN U18 Girls won the Shield at the Worthing Girls’ 10s festival, an event which they competed in as part of their annual rugby tour.
The Welwyn tourists struggled from their tents into bright West Sussex sunshine and the promise of a whole day of competitive rugby.
A total of 14 teams had assembled for the Worthing 10s, including some familiar foes but also a number of unknown teams including one from as far away as Barnsley.
Their first game was against Uckfield, with Welwyn proving too strong, running out 36-0 victors.
Try-scorers were Olivia Stembridge (two), Harriet Austin, Catrin Bowser, Hannah Jones and Katy Walker, with Abbie Maxwell converting three of them.
But Welwyn didn’t have things all their own way in their second game, and fell to a 17-7 defeat to Worcester.
Bryony Pomfret touched down the try, with Abbie converting.
Coming second in their pool meant Welwyn were placed into the Shield competition against hosts, Worthing in the semi-final.
Tries from Olivia, Catrin and Katy saw Welwyn move into the final with a 15-0 victory.
Against Oakmedians, it was a one-sided affair with the Hobbs Way girls running out victors, 43-0.
Tries came from Catrin (two), Stevie Farrow (two), Katy (two) and Floss Jones, with Abbie making four conversions.
Esher took the U18 Cup competition beating Worcester in the final.
