Welwyn Rugby Club’s U15 girls took the National 7s Championship title after a dominant set of displays at Lichfield RFC.
The Welwyn girls capped off a run to the final that included wins over hosts Lichfield, Liskard Leopards, Gosforth All Blacks and West Kent Divas, by beating Castleford 28-5.
Welwyn were faced with a well-drilled Castleford side, who had remained unbeaten this season and were recently crowned national cup winners.
From the kick-off Castleford showed their pedigree with slick hands to take an early lead through a try under the posts.
This was to be Castleford’s only points of the match though as Welwyn proved their class for the remainder of the clash.
Welwyn soon unleashed Helena Rowland to score two tries in the first half.
Castleford were now in disarray and a loose pass and a lucky bounce saw tight head prop Daisy Mae Parker scorch through the middle to score under the posts.
With the game still in the balance at 21-5 at half-time, Welwyn just needed to keep their heads to get over the line.
It took until the final five minutes for Welwyn to finally break through once more.
Cara Wardle broke free to score in the left-hand corner with minutes remaining to complete the resounding victory.
