CONTROVERSY surrounded the encounter between the bottom two sides Welwyn and Harpenden in the league when the referee refused to award what appeared to be a perfectly good conversion kick in the last minute of the game.

That would have given the Hobbs Way outfit a 24-23 win and five league points.

With seconds left on the clock, a scintillating run by Harry Gillespie saw him dancing through the Harpenden defence to score under the posts and seemingly snatch a much needed win for Welwyn.

Pat Lynch’s successful conversion kick was disallowed by the referee and the Welwyn players were left bemused and bitterly disappointed at coming away from the match with only two bonus points as they went down 24-23.
