HATFIELD stormed to an impressive win against Sodam in Herts/Middlesex 3 on Saturday.
The Roe Hill outfit started the game strongly and they were awarded a line out on Sodam’s five-meter line. A good catch and drive from Hatfield’s forwards sucked in the visitor’s player and stretched the defensive line.
The ball was quickly passed out to the backs and through the back line, allowing Jonathan Thompson to run in under the posts and score the first points of the match. A successful conversion took the home side to seven points clear in the first five minutes.
Hatfield’s forwards and backs again linked up well, allowing full back Russell Owen to get over Sodam’s try line but unfortunately they couldn’t convert the opportunity with the ball being knocked on.
This did not stop the Roe Hill side keeping up the pressure, which paid off by creating an overlap for Damien Poulter to score on the wing; an unsuccessful conversion took Hatfield 12-0 up.
More hard work in the HQE2 pack was rewarded with a scrum, which enabled captain George Stone to make a storming run before managing to off load to Poulter who ran in for his second try of the game. Iain Burnett successfully converted the try.
Sodam started to feed off Hatfield’s mistakes with some good direct running through their back line, but Hatfield managed to steal the ball back at the breakdown.
This allowed Aldrin Bhebhe to break from the halfway line, before making a pass to prop Adam Pengelly who scored under the posts, another successful conversion made it 26-0. A miskick from Sodam’s full-back on their 22-metre line allowed Hatfield to steal the ball with quick hands down the line allowing Tobie Vermeire to score on the wing. Another successful conversion took Hatfield 33 points clear.
In the second half Hatfield continued as they started with scrum half Leon Ellis made a good box kick from a ruck allowing Owen to pick up and score his first try of the game.
The home side’s forwards did not let up the pressure with a quick ruck, which was distributed through the back line with Thompson scoring his second try, Burnett successfully converting the try taking Hatfield to 47 points.
HQE2’s Owen burst through Sodam’s defence with a storming run to finish off with a try under the posts, taking Hatfield to 54 points with another successful conversion.
With five minutes to go Hatfield wanted to finish the game as strongly as they had started and never stopped looking for their next try, which came from winger Leon Entwistle for a final score of 61 points to zero.
The Town Inn Man of the Match was awarded to winger Tobie Vermeire in only his second game with the club.
Coach Adam Bowe said: “There were some great runs from the back line, and forwards dominating in the break down areas; but the team needs to reduce handing errors before next weekend’s league game against Old Tottonians away.”
