Despite their focus to improve at the beginning of the season, Hatfield QE2 Rugby Club did not expect to be in the position they are now in.

Last season saw them struggling to compete and get results. Opting to withdraw from the newly-formed Herts/Middlesex 2 division and entering the Herts/Middlesex 4 merit table, the team was looking to rebuild.

Now, having secured the title in their first season, Hatfield are looking to complete the double this Saturday at Biggleswade RFC. Only Saracens Amateurs 2nds stand in their way of that becoming a reality.

Their title-winning campaign began with encouraging signs but nevertheless a loss at Welwyn’s third team on the opening day.

However, that was to be one of only two losses for the club this season.

Now unbeaten in the league since October, ironically losing their last game to Saracens Amateurs, and having conceded 100 points less than any other side in the division, it has been a season to remember for Hatfield.

Despite the relative dominance of QE2, some of their wins have been by the slenderest of margins, with a stiff defence and potent scrum contributing to their recent success.

Captain George Stone said: “We’ve had a good mix of some new players and some old reliable players this year. No one expected us to achieve what we have this season and that has added to our motivation.”

As well as beating their cup final opponents, Hendon and Welwyn 3rds to top spot in the league, they also finished top of the Herts Honours table, a league that plots the percentage of wins against other Herts teams. Topping it off with a cup triumph would seal a spectacular season for Hatfield.

Vice-captain Sam Wingad said: “Sarries are a team we know all about and despite being one of only two teams to have beaten us this season, they failed to score a point in our last meeting.

“This will give us confidence going into the final and hopefully that will serve us well.”
