WELWYN RFC won their own annual 10-a-side pre-season tournament on Saturday.

It is the fifth time the club have run the competition and they enjoyed fine weather for it at the weekend.

A total of 10 teams competed for the Cup, Plate and Shield.

Welwyn RFC beat Bishop's Stortford 2nds in the final to retain the Cup for the third year running.

The Plate was lifted by Hertford 3rds, with Welwyn Exiles winning the Shield.

Fourth place went to Barnet Elizabethans with Stockwood Park taking the fifth slot.

As usual, the teams were divided into two pools of five, with each team playing four matches.

The fifth, fourth, third, second and first placed teams then played those from the opposing pool in the finals.

Welwyn's group comprised Stockwood Park, Pink Socks, Welwyn Exiles and Barnet Elizabethans.

The other pool included the likes of Hertford 3rds, Beerandrugby.com, Borehamwood and Verulamians.

Hertfordshire Rugby Football Union Referees Society provided the officials for the day.

The occasion gave players and referees alike the opportunity to test out the new Experimental Law Variations brought in by the International Rugby Board for this season.

There was a good standard of rugby on display with close results in some of the matches.

Welwyn's team boasted some new faces to complement some of last year's regulars and they gelled well together.

The players combined well to produce some impressive rugby skills.

It gave new first team coach Joe Duignam an encouraging start to his pre-season campaign.
