HATFIELD Comets Under-13s have been crowned champions of the Chiltern Junior Rugby League.
And to complete a magnificent season for St Albans Centurions' two junior sides, New Greens Gladiators - Comets' sister team - finished runners-up after beating Grovehill Tigers 32-20.
Both teams are in their first year of playing rugby league against more established opponents, so their achievements of finishing as the top two clubs cannot be denied.
The competition included teams from Hemel Hempstead, Northampton and Aylesbury.
The Comets went into their last game of the season knowing that their victory the previous week had already clinched them the title and it was a bit of a disappointment when the last game of the regular season at Hemel Hempstead against the Adeyfield Dragons had to be called off just before kick-off because of a frozen pitch.
Under the rules, when no team is at fault for a cancellation, and no replay can be arranged, due to next week's play-offs, both teams are awarded one point each.
However, things could not have been more different for the Gladiators, who went into their last game against Grovehill Tigers from Hemel Hempstead.
Both teams were in joint second place with not only the same amount of points, but also the same points difference. That meant whoever won would be runners-up and take second spot.
The end of season play-offs, to find the Chiltern League 'Major Premiers', will be held on Saturday.
Comets play fourth-placed Adeyfield Dragons at St Albans Centurions' Colney Heath ground, kick-off 11am. Runners-up New Greens Gladiators faced third-placed Grovehill Tigers in Hemel Hempstead.
The Grand Final at Hemel Hempstead Stags Rugby League Club is on March 1.
