LUCK really was not on the side of Hatfield Swimming Club competitor Johnny Quinn at the European Junior Championships yesterday (Thursday).

Despite the 18-year-old from Potters Bar clocking the seventh fastest time out of 33 performers in the heats of the boys' 200m individual medley, he did not progress to the semi-finals in Belgrade.

Under the competition rules, only two swimmers from each country can progress from the heats into the last 16.

GB's Mohammed Xavier and Pavoni Roberto were first and third fastest, so claimed their places in the semis knocking British team-mate Quinn out of the competition.

Quinn, who has set British records in the 200m medley at U13, U14 and U15 age groups, competed in heat three of five.

He finished second behind Xavier in a time of 2 minutes 06.99 seconds.

It is not the first time the teenager, who went to Dame Alice Owen's School in Potters Bar, has raced on the international stage.

He competed at the inaugural World Youth Championships in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and was a World Schools' Games silver medallist in 2006.
