Their visit to Island Bohemia Bowls Club in Reading required nautical help as the club is situated on De Montfort Island in the Thames.

But while the weather, location and welcome could not be faulted, they slipped to a 109-97 defeat over five rinks.

There was another long trip as 30 from the club headed to the south coast to take on seven clubs around Bournemouth.

Back home Diane Jewell won in both the District Champion of Champions and the County Unbadged Singles while in the County Singles Pam Rogers beat Alison Hall of Hatfield only to lose to in-form Rachel Tremlett, a junior England International of Royston.

But she then teamed up with Sandra Smale to win 25-8 against Harperbury in the County Pairs.

There were also wins in the District 2 Wood Triples against North Mymms, the Prentice Cup against Bounds Green and the Bob Vise Trophy over Hatfield.
