After a gruelling outdoor season Potters Bar Bowls Club jetted off to sunnier climes – although they still took their woods with them.

A squad of 54 headed out to Paphos in Cyprus where they played in three friendlies against local Cypriot sides.

And apart from one match that was interrupted by a thunderstorm, the weather was perfect with a balmy 26 degrees greeting the bowlers most days.

Members played in different teams each day, with trophies awarded for the top rink and best players overall.

Betty Whitbread from Cheshunt BC was the lady champion, Bar’s Brian Finch took the men’s title and a triples event went the way of John Guest, Maggie Baldwin and Terry Whitebread.

The week also saw numerous fines and raffles raise nearly £500, all of which will go to president Suzy Thurlow’s nominated Headway Hertfordshire charity which provides support for people with brain damage.
