BADMINTON star Ryan McCarthy, from Potters Bar, is heading off to the Isle of Man on Friday to represent England in the Commonwealth Youth Games.

The former Chancellor’s student, who is about to start studying at Loughborough University, is to compete for his nation in the doubles and mixed doubles.

He said: “All the preparations have been going well, I have been going to Bath and Loughborough to get ready for the Games.

“I have seen the draws and we have tough ones but we can make the semi-finals and from there you never know what can happen.

“This will be the biggest competition I have been to as it is a multi-sport competition.”

The 18-year-old was delighted to be picked for the team.

“I was excited to be named in the squad and kept checking my e-mails when I was waiting for the confirmation to come through,” he added.

The Commonwealth Youth Games take place on the Isle of Man from September 7-13 across seven sports; athletics, badminton, boxing, cycling, gymnastics (men’s and women’s), rugby 7s and swimming.
