WELWYN Warriors Lacrosse Club is £1,000 richer after being named as a winner in the 'Cash 4 Clubs' scheme.

Five community sports clubs from the Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire region have benefited from Betfair's £5,000 Big Cash Giveaway.

The nationwide scheme, set up to give a vital cash boost to sports clubs, ran in partnership with Archant - publishers of the WHT - before Christmas.

Five of Archant's regional papers ran token promotions over a six-week period.

The lucky recipients, each receiving a £1,000 cash prize, were selected from the Hunts Post, the Comet, the Cambs Times & Wisbech Standard, the Herts Advertiser and of course the WHT.

Betfair were thrilled with the response in what was the first time that they had used weekly newspapers.

Warriors are joined by Cambourne Cricket Club, Hitchin Rugby Club, Parson Drove Cricket Club and Special Olympics St Albans.

The successful lacrosse club will be buying new kit for both junior and senior teams, as well as new equipment for their popular school lacrosse programme.

Georgina Corbett, corporate social responsibility executive at Betfair, said: "It was a very difficult decision to make as we had so many worthy applications.

"But the judges and I felt that the five clubs we picked really stood out and would benefit the most from the cash prize and I would like to offer them my congratulations.

"I'm looking forward to meeting all the winners and seeing how they've used the funds to help develop their club.
