HERTS Phoenix athletes flew out of the blocks at the start of the indoor season by claiming eight medals at the South of England Championships.

The club took five gold, one silver and two bronze medals home after the event at the Lee Valley Athletics Centre in Picketts Lock.

WGC hurdlers Stephanie Gaynor and Claire Humphries took regional titles in their respective age groups last weekend.

Gosling-based Gaynor struck gold in the Under-20 women's 60m hurdles and Sir Frederic Osborn schoolgirl Humphries won the U17 age group.

Star sprinter Jodie Williams, jumps specialist Katie Caulfield and middle distance runner Edward Shepherd all put in superb performances to claim gold medals in their events.

Queenswood School pupil Williams stormed to victory in the U15 60m on the track with a blistering time.

Monk's Walk teenager Caulfield took the long jump honours in the U17 age group with a massive new personal best.

County cross-country champion Shepherd set a championship best in winning the U15 1,500m.

A silver medal went to Andrew Walshe in the U15 400m, while club newcomer Sam Higgins took bronze in the U15 boys' long jump.

English Schools' medallist Laura Wake collected the club's other medal with a bronze in the U20 women's 200m.
