PRAISE has come in from all quarters for Welwyn Hatfield Borough Sports Awards organiser Colin Smyth.

Colin is leaving the council later this month and former awards winner Ian Miller acknowledged the efforts of the sports partnership officer in putting on last month's gala evening and also the WHTimes for backing the event again.

Record-breaking veteran athlete Miller, 73, won the inaugural Sports Person of the Year back in 2004 and returned to the stage to present a prize at this year's ceremony.

Speaking the day after the awards, the Herts Phoenix AC stalwart from Welwyn said: "Last night was a credit to both you and Colin Smyth.

"Both of you were the instigators of this event and it goes from strength to strength each year.

"Let's hope that Colin's replacement has the same commitment."

The council's sports champion, Cllr Nick Atkinson, also thanked the efforts of those who staged the show.

He said: "Without the brilliant work of Colin Smyth and other officers, together with the councillors who have caught the mood of the community in supporting an event like this, I would not be hosting such an excellent event.
