ACCORDING to reports in the national press this morning, Beijing boxer Billy Joe Saunders has been suspended by the ABA relating to an incident that happened prior to this summer's Olympic Games.

Not long after making the headlines for his points defeat to Cuban fighter Carlos Banteaux Suarez, it appears Hatfield fighter Saunders returned home to find a letter awaiting him notifying of a suspension.

The details of the ban are as yet unclear, but it is believed it relates to an incident that occurred whilst the Hoddesdon Boxing Academy product was training in France a few months ago.

In a statement, Britain's boxing head coach Terry Edwards said he was "extremely disillusioned" by the allegations and questioned the timing of the reports.

He said: "My focus over the next 48 hours is to prepare my three boxers for their semi-final bouts tomorrow (Friday).

"The allegations made in the media about the conduct of athletes on the British Boxing Programme are, on the whole, unfounded."

This revelation is sure to distract the remaining boxers Team GB has fighting for medal positions.

Middleweight James DeGale, light-heavyweight Tony Jeffries and super-heavyweight David Price have all guaranteed at least a bronze medal, and will be hoping they can be left to concentrate on improving further.
