Hertfordshire Mavericks made it two wins out of two after a gritty 48-40 win over Loughborough Lightning in the Netball Super League.
With former long-serving coach Karen Atkinson returning to Hertfordshire, the stakes were always going to be high.
Mavericks stamped their authority on the opening exchanges, with eventual player of the match Kadeen Corbin making the most of space around the net and setting up a 12-9 lead in the first quarter.
The visitors, who remained winless for the entirety of the previous Super League season, stormed back though and a half-time scoreline of 23-23 was just on the balance of play.
Home coach Sam Bird saw fit to ring the changes at the break and it slightly derailed her side as Atkinson’s ladies then raced into a four-point lead at 29-25 at the start of the third quarter.
However, Mavericks were not to be toppled by their former general and having turned their deficit into a surplus to lead 34-31 with one quarter remaining, they sealed the win with some high-energy forward play.
Next up for Bird’s ladies is a trip to Manchester Thunder on Monday night.
