CYCLING star Claire Newland of Welwyn Wheelers successfully retained her World Masters 3,000m Pursuit title at this year’s World Masters Track Championship in Manchester.

For the second year in succession, Claire won gold in the women’s pursuit, in the 45-49 age category.

In her qualifying ride in the morning, Claire caught her opponent Orla Hedron of Ireland in the closing laps and narrowly missed setting a new world best time, posting a time of 2mins 32.770secs.

The current world best time is 2mins 31.570secs set by Annette Williams of the USA in 2009.

In the evening final Claire posted 2mins 34.82secs to win gold, with Jayne Payne winning silver and Janet Birkmyre bronze to make an all British podium.

It was notable that Claire set the fastest time of any age group both in qualifying and in the finals.
