THE return of England captain Amanda Newton failed to inspire Mavericks to victory on Saturday.
Newton made her first appearance of the Co-operative Netball Superleague season for the Hatfield-based team against leaders Team Northumbria at the Hertfordshire Sports Village.
However, Newton, fresh from skippering England to the semi-finals of the World Netball Championships in New Zealand, couldn't guide her club to victory in Saturday's top-of-the-table clash.
Unbeaten Team Northumbria retained their perfect record for the 2007-08 season with an impressive 51-31 win over a gritty and determined Mavericks side.
Even Newton's world class experience could not counteract the Tynesiders' pace and precision in driving the ball through midcourt.
For Northumbria, Aussie Lara McLeod led the scoring charts after netting 27 of her side's goals.
She was ably supported by some accurate work from Lisa Stanley and Scotland's Lesley Macdonald.
Despite nine goals from Gemma Wiseman and 22 from Michelle Hall, Mavericks' new Kiwi signing, the points were always destined to go to the North East team.
After the defeat Mavericks slipped to fourth spot in the Superleague with eight points from seven games.
They will need to finish in the top four to reach the end of season plays-off in March.
On Saturday Mavericks face another stern test when they take on third-placed side and reigning champions Team Bath.
