NORTH Mymms bowlers are gearing up for the new outdoor season next month.

The Welham Green club's members open the new campaign on Saturday, April 26 when they entertain Rosedale and then Radlett on the Sunday.

Regrettably, this season the club will be that much poorer for the loss of Frank Maynard, who passed away in January.

A club stalwart for over 50 years, he was made a life member in 1991 and had served as chairman and captain.

Few will forget his superb final delivery to turn defeat into victory to secure Mymms their first ever Herts county title in the 2006 Club Team Ten competition.

Also a life member and former president of the Hertfordshire Bowls Association, Frank will be sadly missed on greens throughout England and Wales.

A very enjoyable presentation lunch for 85 Mymms members and friends was held at the Homestead Court Hotel in WGC where the top awards in the ladies' and men's championships went to Diann Howell and Geoff Moorhouse.

Diann is this year's ladies' captain and John Penfold steps up for the second time to lead the men.

Both face a full programme of friendly and cup and league encounters in Herts county and St Albans & District competitions.

A 30-strong party flew out to Portugal in the close season for eight days in Vilamoura.

During their stay in the Algarve, Mymms chalked up three victories from the four matches played.

Mymms' men also recently took on Hatfield IBC in the annual Model Cup fixture and took the trophy by 80 shots to 71.

Unfortunately, the ladies were well beaten by a strong team two days earlier.

North Mymms still have vacancies for new members of all ages, from experienced players to those just wanting to give bowls a try and for whom instruction and coaching is available.
