DAVE Murphy almost singlehandedly bowled Knebworth Park 5ths to victory on Saturday.

Murphy took amazing figures of nine wickets for 27 runs in 15 overs to win a close-fought match in Saracens Herts Division 11 against near neighbours Codicote.

After Codicote openers Luke Richards (40) and Jon Gillard (16) had made a runaway start of 54, Murphy's accurate medium pace bowling stemmed the flow and wickets soon began to fall.

Backed up by some excellent catching, wickets kept tumbling and an unlikely victory suddenly seemed possible.

Chasing a modest 133, Codicote were at one stage 77-2 and had victory within their sights.

But after the openers had departed, only youngster McQueen (18) managed double figures.

With Murphy having taken all nine wickets to fall, it was Under-15 Tom Elliott who snatched the final wicket thanks to a diving catch by keeper Richard Jones.

The pattern of Codicote's innings followed that of Knebworth's knock earlier in the afternoon.

A good opening stand from Russell Tomkin, who hit some superb attacking shots in his 40, and a resilient 28 from Chris Johnson added 68 for the first wicket.

But thereafter only Joe Elliott (16) and Tristan Tomkin (18) were able to reach double figures as all 10 wickets fell for 65 runs as the Park were bowled out for 133.

Codicote bowled accurately throughout with Carl Richards wheeling away unchanged and posing problems for the batsmen.

Josh Lucy was also accurate with his nagging away swing.
