HATFIELD speedway racer Robert Mear was promoted to number two spot as Rye House Rockets beat Edinburgh Monarchs 48-42 last Saturday.

In was always going to be a tough encounter for Rye House.

When Monarchs' Andrew Tully surprised captain Chris Neath and Mear to take the opening heat, the home crowd feared the worse.

But the Rockets dug deep to record a fine victory and teenager Mear impressed.

In heat eight he came from well adrift to cut inside opponent Ryan Fisher before the line.

The win was even more important for the Rockets as they had been well and truly thumped 66-27 in the Premier League by Somerset Rebels the night before.
