Hertfordshire Mavericks scored a memorable 48-41 win against Manchester Thunder to earn a place in the Netball Superleague finals against Surrey Storm.

The Hatfield-based Mavericks broke the hearts of Thunder fans, who had flocked to Manchester Arena to cheer on their team.

The record 4100 attendance - the most for any UK domestic netball match outside London - made for a noisy, electric atmosphere.

Mavericks coach Sam Bird said: “It’s a fantastic feeling to be in the final, we’re worked really hard all season to get there and it paid off today.

“All credit to Thunder they are always such difficult opposition and the home crowd were really behind them today.

“They’ve done an excellent job of promoting the match and it’s great to see netball being played in such a large arena in front of more than 4,000 fans.”
