HERTFORDSHIRE Mavericks will play-off for a place in the Netball Superleague semi-finals tomorrow night (Thursday).

Karen Atkinson’s charges will host Manchester Thunder at the Herts Sports Village, Hatfield in a live TV match from 8pm.

Mavericks were fourth in the eight team Superleague phase one table that was then split in to two leagues.

The top four went in to the Showdown and the other four into the Challenger.

Mavericks were fourth in the Showdown group and will face Thunder, who topped the Challenger group, in what is effectively a fourth-fifth place play-off.

The winner of that will join Team Bath, Celtic Dragons and Surrey Storm in the play-off semi-finals.

The two teams left standing at the end of those semi-finals will meet in the grand final where the overall champions will be crowned.

A disappointing second phase saw Mavericks lose all six of their matches in the Showdown League against Team Bath, Celtic Dragons and Surrey Storm.

Atkinson has been far from happy with her side’s display this term.

After a 60-39 loss to Team Bath in the penultimate Showdown league game, the former England captain said: “The score line is disappointing as we shouldn’t have let it get out so far.

“There were some improved passages of play from our matches against Storm, but a combination of basic errors, lack of concentration and lack of intensity at crucial times is killing us.”

However, a win against Thunder will give Mavericks a chance of competing in the play-offs.
