THE GALLERIA Mavericks have reached their third successive Netball Superleague Grand Final.
The Hatfield-based team beat Tynesiders Team Northumbria 52-34 in the second round of the Co-operative Netball Superleague play-offs at the EIS in Sheffield on Saturday.
The emphatic win takes Naomi Siddall and her colleagues through to their third successive Grand Final, where they will face Loughborough Lightning, who ended the regular season at the top of the league table.
Playing in front of the England selectors, U21 squad member Monique Wood was named Co-operative player of the match.
During her impressive performance she withstood the close attentions of Northumbria's towering player Megan Hutton.
The Kiwi GK's reach and anticipation kept the Mavericks' shooters under intense pressure for the entire game.
Both teams took time to settle before Mavericks' flat, fast attacking pattern started to pay dividends.
Team Northumbria actually scored first.
At 1-0 they had further chances to double their lead. However, they missed a host of opportunities before Mavericks levelled things at 1-1.
From then on Mavericks never fell behind in the encounter.
The Herts Sports Village side had edged 11-9 ahead by the end of the first quarter and were 25-18 up at half-time.
Mavericks brought on Ann Marie Muller at the break and moved England international Karen Atkinson to centre.
It was the performance in the following quarter which enabled the Hatfield side to take control of the match. After that period they led 39-26.
Mavericks were too strong in the final minutes of the game and held off a spirited attempt by their northern opponents who gave their all.
Northumbria, runners-up in the league during the regular season, kept pressing.
However, the international combination of Clare Elsley, England captain Amanda Newton and Siddall swarmed all over the Tynesiders' attacking plays to keep the initiative with the Mavericks and guide them to victory.
The Hatfield outfit will now be looking for Grand Final glory.
MAVERICKS will now look forward to their third successive Grand Final.
They will face a formidable Loughborough Lightning side at the K2 Arena in Crawley on Saturday.
The domestic netball season showpiece is already completely sold out, but fans eager to watch the Mavericks will be to see the match in its entirety on Sky Sports.
