Martyn Walton wins gold at British Championships

Martyn Walton won gold in the 200m individual medley at British Swimming’s Summer Championships held at Ponds Forge, Sheffield.
The Hatfield Swimming Club member, from Stevenage, clocked 2:03.71 in the final to finish two-tenths of a second ahead of second place Joe Litchfield from Doncaster Dartes in the event for swimmers aged 17 and 18.
Walton also picked up silver in the 17/18 200m backstroke final, his time of 2:01.64 is a PB in that event and was a second behind winner Luke Greenback (2:00.64) of Cockermouth, the world junior record holder.
He also helped Hatfield to the final of the men’s 17+ 400m freestyle relay where the team of Walton (51.15s), William Kearsey (52.73), Nico Campbell (52.23s) and Timothy Shuttleworth (51.94s) finished in fifth place.
Hatfield were also fourth behind winners City of Sheffield, Swansea Aquatics and Millfield School in the final of the 17+ 800m freestyle relay
Hatfield Swimming Club’s Lily West, who is from Stevenage, won bronze in the 100m butterfly, her first national medal, in 1:01.31. In the 200m butterfly final for swimmers aged 17 and 18, West was fifth in 2:14.48.
Also swimming for Hatfield was Luke Turley, from Stevenage, who picked up his first ever individual national medal with a swim of 53.08 to win bronze in the U15 100m freestyle. He was also joint fourth with William Foster of Co. Derby in the same time of 1:55.89 in the men’s U15 200m freestyle final.
