LEWIS Hamilton will get behind the wheel of his new McLaren for the first time in Spain on Thursday.

Following today's launch event in Germany the vehicle Hamilton hopes to drive to glory will be transported to the Circuito de Jerez in Southern Spain.

New McLaren team member Heikki Kovalainen and test driver Pedro de la Rosa will start the test programme with two MP4-23 chassis at a private test on Wednesday.

The Woking team will remain at the circuit for five track days, excluding the weekend. Hamilton will get his first taste of the 2008 car on Thursday alongside Finn Kovalainen.

"I will be testing it for the first time on Thursday," said 2007 world championship runner-up Hamilton on his 23rd birthday.

"It is going to be a busy time but myself, Heikki, who I welcome as my new teammate, and everyone within the team is looking forward to it as we push forward together."

Herts hero Hamilton, who has moved to live in Switzerland, will race the new MP4-23 for real on March 16 when the 2008 World Championship opens with the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.
