Laura Trott won double gold at the UCI Track World Championships in London and made a Hatfield father and son’s day in the process.

Having watched the former Welwyn Wheeler scoop top spot in the scratch race at the Lee Valley VeloPark, Hatfield’s Garry Fisher and his 12-year-old son Frankie bumped into double Olympic champion Trott on their way home.

Garry said: “Laura was on the road cycling and then stopped at traffic lights.

“We asked someone if it was her and then went over and had a photo taken with her.

“We had won tickets in a raffle organised by Mark and Lorraine Purdy aid of Cystic Fibrosis.

“I was blown away by the whole day, the racing was so exciting, then to meet Laura on the way home topped it off.

“She is a lovely girl.

“I couldn’t believe that someone we had just seen win a gold medal was then humble enough to be riding home afterwards.”

After winning a team pursuit bronze on Friday, Trott, whose family home is in Hertfordshire, took omnium gold on Sunday.
