The challenge of making the jump up to a modern GpN Mitsubishi Lancer wasn’t enough for Kimpton rally driver James Grint at the beginning of the year.
He’s since taken on two of the most testing asphalt rallies in the UK, the Manx National and Jim Clark Memorial Rally, along with a full assault on the gravel based BTRDA Rally Series.
In his bid to gain as much experience as possible, James is now planning on entering his first International event – the penultimate round of the British Rally Championship – the Trackrod International Rally Yorkshire.
Taking his Greased Lightning backed Mitsubishi Lancer Evo9 in to the Yorkshire forests for the first time, James is partnered by experienced co-driver, Craig Drew, who leads the Rally America, national championship, with David Higgins.
“It’s going to be a good test to see how I compare with the best in the UK,” said James.
“The pace has been lightning this year in both the BTRDA and watching the results from the BRC – David Bogie is on a mission and Elfyn Evans and Jonny Greer will be a very tough act to follow.”
It’s the first time James has competed in an International level event, but the 21-year-old has already built up experience of recceing and writing his own pace notes.
“Nik Elsmore, Steve Greenhill and I did a lot of work on the Manx and Jim Clark Rally perfecting the pace notes.
“I’m confident writing notes that work, and that confidence in the notes really allows me to push harder and faster on the stages.”
James is supported by the British Rally Championship tyre sponsors, Pirelli.
“We’re really lucky to have the support from Pirelli going in to our first BRC event.
“We’ll do a shakedown, get used to the tyres and have confidence to push from the outset.”
