A rising star in the world of table tennis from Welwyn has been named in the England ranks for the new season.

James Hamblett was one of 33 selected for the nine to 13 hopes squad by Table Tennis England.

The squad is for the youngest athletes in the England set-up.

They will attend regular training camps with the national coaches as they start on a pathway which leads to the England Youth squad and ultimately to senior England recognition.

The 12-year-old was selected following an application process, following which players were invited to an assessment day at the University of Nottingham, where the squad will be based.

Hamblett plays for Warren Spring Table Tennis Club, who play out of Newnham Village Hall in Baldock, in the North Herts Table Tennis League.

He is a former pupil of Welwyn St Mary’s School.
