HAMMER thrower Richard Humphries broke the Herts Phoenix club record while representing the county.

The WGC teenager first set a personal best, then destroyed it and the club record with a huge effort over 50 metres at the Inter-Counties meet in Basildon.

In the hammer circle Humphries, who had been throwing well of late, set a career best of 48.98m with his first attempt.

Richard must have known then it was going to be a good day for him.

He then went on to pepper the 49 metre mark with a series of good efforts.

With his fifth throw he improved his personal best to a massive 52.45m, which also broke the club record.

This gave him second place in the match and showed that he was coming into form ahead of the National AAAs.

The new record pushes the Herts Phoenix athlete back up to 13th in the national rankings for his age group.

Elsewhere, other boys from the club were in action at the competition.

In the 800m, both Stanborough School's Joe Gaynor, in the A string, and B string runner Thomas Barfoot were up against some high quality opposition in their races.

The duo both ran well to finish sixth with times of 2 mins 04.49 mins and 2 mins 07.20 secs respectively, collecting good points for the team.

Andrew Walshe, running up an age group, performed with his usual composure in the 400m.

He also finished in sixth place, clocking a good time of 53.14 secs.

This shows that Walshe will be a force to be reckoned with and has nothing to fear in the Under-17s next summer.
