FORMER Welwyn Wheeler Emma Trott set a personal best as she collected a bronze medal at the Women's National 10 Mile Time Trial Championship.

The teenager, riding for Team Halfords Bikehut (THB), clocked a time of 21 minutes 10 seconds at the event in Greatham, Hampshire, on Sunday against a field of 94 riders.

Defending champion Julia Shaw won gold in a time of 20 mins 32 secs with Trott's THB team-mate Joanna Rowsall coming second with 20 mins 36 secs.

Although the day started wet, and forced the event to be delayed by half an hour, it turned out to be almost perfect.

A total of 40 riders, including Emma, returned personal best times and a Championship record.

Emma, who won the Junior Women's Championship last year, said: "Although I was targeting this event I thought a top 10 finish, or even five if it went really well, would be respectable, but to step up to the seniors and medal at the first attempt is unbelievable.

"It couldn't have been much better."

Emma was the 50th rider to go in the field and led the event until the last two riders, Shaw and Rowsall, beat her time.

The next race for Emma is the National 25 mile Championship on June 8.

Before then she will return to her Welwyn training routes to try and find some extra speed.
