HERTS Phoenix were well represented at the Herts Schools' Cross-Country Championships.

The club had athletes, competing for their schools, in eight of the different age groups.

Competitors took part at the event held at Verulamium Park, St Albans last month.

Several of the club's runners gained automatic qualification to represent the county at the English Schools' Championships.

One of those likely to be there is Edward Shepherd.

Running for Bishop's Stortford High School, he won the intermediate boys' 7.5km race in 20 minutes 16 seconds.

Behind him in third place was club and school colleague Tom Barfoot in 20.54.

David Wilson was fourth in 20.57, Sean Talbot 10th with 21.46 and Vasudev Zaver 13th in 22.21.

In the inter girls' 3,900m race, Ella Fuller was 11th in 17.51, Maisey Fuller 14th with 18.36 and Molly Veitch 27th after clocking 22.37.

For the senior girls, Laura Whitehead came sixth in 17.40.

Stanborough's Joe Gaynor was the first Herts Phoenix member home in the senior boys' 7.5km race.

The WGC teenager was seventh in 31.13, Jon Kinahan was 10th with 32.05, while Monk's Walk's Louis Walshe finished 12th in 32.56.

Sixth place in the junior boys' competition was claimed by Liam Cloona with 15.57.

Liam Dee got 10th in 16.23, Daniel Barcroft was 16th with 16.46, Nick Doyle 19th in 16.54 and Tom Gillett 50th with 18.43.

Eight Herts Phoenix runners were in the junior girls' 3,400m event.

Presdales pupil Mary Gough was runner-up in 11.53.

Emily Ruane came seventh with 12.12.

Others to finish included: Bishop's Hatfield's Ella Lloyd 11th in 12.28, Jade Denham 16th 12.57, Melly Dalton 21st 13.15, Katie Burr 30th 13.41, Hannah Nolan 38th 14.03 and Shannon Procter 39th 14.05.

The pre-junior girls' race saw Bishop's Hatfield student Lizzie Parry come fourth in 11.12, Megan Breen sixth 11.34, Isabel Found 18th 12.41 and Alicia Found 22nd 12.50.

Jake Barraclough won the pre-junior boys' race in 10.11.

Samuel Jones was behind him in 11th with 10.44, while Jamie Jones was 13th in 10.47.
