Welwyn Hatfield Fencing Club had three youngsters enter the Hertfordshire Junior Fencing Tournament at Hatfield’s Herts Sports Village on Saturday.

The event saw 104 children take part in 14 categories.

Welwyn Hatfield’s Maria Cunningham won a bronze medal in the over 13 girls’ sabre, plus she was entered for the under 14 girls’ foil and collected a medal for the best placed novice having reached the quarter-final.

A second club member, who we have been asked not to name, won bronze in the under 14 girls’ foil.

The club’s third competitor, Yasan Pathirana, was another novice who only started learning fencing in September.

He came 13th out of 20 boys in the U12 boys’ foil category after the first round of poules.

Yasan went on to win his first direct elimination with a score of 10-1.

Unfortunately he lost his second direct elimination 10-3. This left him placed 13th overall.

The Hertfordshire Junior Championships are held annually, every February and numbers are growing better each year.

It is hoped more will take part next year, but for now preparations are in place for two more competitions in the county.

The Hertfordshire Senior Championship will be held on April 26 and the Hertfordshire Team Foil and Epee Championship will be on June 7.
