Hatfield swimmer Nathan Hughes secured two personal bests in a steep learning curve at the European Youth Olympic Festival in Tbilisi, Georgia.

The 15-year-old finished eighth in the 400m individual medley final, while taking his two PBs in in the 4x100m freestyle heats (the team finished eighth in the final), and 200m breaststroke in two minutes 23:73 seconds, just missing out on the final.

Hughes said: “I was a bit disappointed because my PB in the 400m medley final would have won a bronze but it just wasn’t to be on the day.

“I’m delighted to have been selected and be here with Team GB. It’s my first time competing for my country so it’s been a great week to just be a part of.

“The festival has been much bigger than I thought it would be. My highlight has been getting to know all the other sports as it’s so rare that we’re at events with athletes other than swimmers.

“It’s an honour to compete for Team GB and wear the Olympic rings. I’ve always wanted to have been a part of that and hopefully one day I can go on and compete for Team GB at a senior Olympic Games.”
