Hatfield Hyde Cricket Club will be marking the tragic passing of Australian Phillip Hughes with a “put your bats out” tribute at their ground in Welwyn Garden City at 10am.

Hughes, 25, was struck on the back of the head by a ball while batting for South Australia against New South Wales at the Sydney Cricket Ground last Tuesday and subsequently passed away two days later in hospital.

Since the young cricketers’ death, people have honoured the life of Hughes by putting their bats together and taking pictures for social media sites to show solidarity.

Hyde club captain, Eddie Mills said: “Everyone has been affected by the death of Phil Hughes and we know that it could happen to anyone.

“With the blessing of the chairman, we thought it would be a nice idea to show our support by holding this event.”

Anyone that would like to pay their respects is welcome to come down with their bat to King George V playing fields, Beehive La Welwyn Garden City AL7 4BP.
